Today while watching some post election coverage, I heard a democratic pundit make this comment. Barack Obama's harshest critics will come from the left not the right. So as I thought about this concept I could only agree with him.
Barack Obama was called the most liberal senator by republicans and they are right. His voting record shows that he tends to go to the far left with his views and votes. But during his presidential campaign Barack Obama ran more center-left than far left. He did this to attracted the center-right vote. Well it worked. He got the center-right vote. If he didn't he would have lost. Not even all the homeless bused in to Ohio to register and vote could have helped if he didn't get the center-right vote. So what does this have to do with the price of rice in China?
Well he ran center-left. Pushing for tax cuts for middle Americans. Giving these cuts in the form of check for many. He also said he would be strong on national security. He has said he would set a time table for withdraw in Iraq to appease the liberal left. But if our enemies perceives him as weak, they may issue threats. Forcing him to stay in Iraq and take a strong stand for the nations safety. Also the economy may not allow him to make his tax cuts or pass out his "tax credit" checks and raise taxes on business. These things will make the far left angry with him and they will criticize him to no end. His friends Pelosi, Frank, and Reid will be very angry.
So what is left for him to do? If he makes the right response, the center-right will be happy with him, but unhappy with congress. Voting in a more center-right in congress in two years. Maybe allowing him a second term in 2012. If he swings too far to the left for the center-right, in two years we will have a center-right congress again, but no second term for Obama. So what would he do? Play it safe or commit political suicide? Thats is the question. But knowing what we know about Barack Obama and his throw them under the bus to save my political career attitude, Pelosi, Reid and Frank would have tire marks on their backs and Barack will come out smelling like a rose.
There is a glimmer of hope, and if the republican party can get its crap together, ( see this post http://workingclassview.blogtownhall.com/2008/11/05/a_new_direction_for_republicans.thtml) conservative views can sort of stay up front and the republicans will get another chance to do it right this time.
